Showtime’s boxing experts have been studying both fighters day and night leading up to this fight, and they broke down Manny Pacquiao’s fighting technique and key attributes in the ring for the latest version of CBS Local Sports’ Fan Essentials series.
“Manny Pacquiao’s biggest strength, and it’s no secret, is his foot speed and his hand speed,” said undefeated light heavyweight boxer Mike Lee. “He’s a guy that comes at you from all different types of angles.”
“He’s tornadic, he’s a hurricane,” CBS Sports writer Jason Keidel said of Pacquiao. “I don’t know how many cliches I can come up with to explain his style.”
The raw skills that Pacquiao possesses can’t be taught, but they can be honed in a certain manner. Our boxing experts attribute a fair portion of Pacquiao’s successes to his long-time trainer Freddie Roach.
“The biggest overall strength is not even in the ring, it’s Freddie Roach,” said two-time champion boxer and Showtime boxing analyst Paulie Malignaggi.
“When you take a great trainer and you give him a raw fighter like Manny Pacquiao with those kind of skills, Freddie saw that from the beginning,” said Showtime boxing analyst Steve Farhood. “And he said, ‘I can mold this guy,’ and look at the result.”
